The ISA Lima Summer program has been selected for students at the advanced Spanish language level. Participants live with host families and participate in ISA's exciting summer excursions, including a visit to Machu Picchu.
Lima, the capital of Peru, is situated on the west coast of the southern Pacific Ocean, along the outlet of the Rímac River. Lima is full of fascinating contrasts between traditional and modern influences. The traditional influences evolved from Peru's history as the home of the Inca and numerous other civilized cultures, dating back as far as 2000 BC. Indigenous cultural traditions and languages still thrive today in Peru.
However, Lima is not only a traditional place, but has moved with the pace of modernity and now boasts strong industries and contemporary technologies. Lima is known for its interesting museums, colonial churches, vibrant cafe scene, striking architecture and genuinely friendly people. In addition, it is the hub of transport to Peru's endless natural treasures and archeological gems. South of the Capital, long white beaches stretch along the Pacific Ocean and are backed by white sand dunes. Lima's importance as the capital city of Peru and its idyllic location along the southern Pacific coast, provide an exceptional site for students to improve their Spanish and learn about Peruvian culture.
Homestays are the norm in Peru and are required for Ohio State students. Students are provided with their own room or could possibly share a room with another ISA student. A traditional homestay includes room and two meals per day (breakfast and the student's choice of either lunch or dinner, seven days per week) and laundry service once per week. Each family has been carefully selected by ISA's resident staff in order to ensure a comfortable living situation. The homestay provides the opportunity for students to experience aspects of the Peruvian lifestyle that are inaccessible to the average visitor, not to mention the invaluable opportunity to practice the Spanish language with locals. Some homestays provide internet access, but not all.
Each course a student takes abroad, regardless of the grade received or how course credit counts toward degree requirements, must:
Be approved via the credit evaluation process; students are strongly encouraged to do this priorto submitting their applications.
Transfer back to the student’s Ohio State record.
Be completed for graded Ohio State credit. This grade will be factored into the student’s GPA.
Completion of the credit evaluation process does not guarantee the availability of the course abroad. Students are encouraged to have multiple back-up courses approved. Students who cancel their participation for failure to secure approval for desired course work will be subject to the cancellation policy.
Students have two program options:
1. Summer 1
2. Summer 1 + service learning: Summer 1 followed by a 4-week service learning experience (minimum 20-30 maximum hours/week required = Spanish 5797
For every 30 service hours, students will earn 1 semester credit hour of Spanish 5797 (25 service hours per week x 4 weeks = 3.3 semester credit hours of Spanish 5797)

All students must take a Spanish language placement exam upon arrival. Level of testing placement and course enrollment are not guaranteed.

Course selection instructions:
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese has reviewed and pre-approved specific courses for this program.
Please schedule an appointment with Michelle Coria (.2) to discuss approved Spanish course work and complete the advising course selection form.
Coursework taken outside of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese must be approved via the credit evaluation process with the appropriate academic department(s).
You must complete these steps PRIOR to submitting the ISA application.
In order to be eligible to apply for this program, students must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, 3.0 Spanish GPA, successfully complete Spanish 3450 and meet OIA's General Eligibility Requirements and Conditions for Participation. All students will also be required to participate in on-campus pre-departure orientations organized by the Office of International Affairs.
Students may not graduate during the same term in which they are participating on a third party provider/direct enroll program.
Application instructions: This application process takes advanced planning. Students should not plan to start the application process within one week of the deadline due to the number of elements involved.
Applicants are required to submit TWO applications:
1. OIA education abroad application (start at the "Apply Now" at the bottom or top of this page);
An academic reference from a current/recent Ohio State Spanish language instructor is required. Students with no Spanish language course experience at Ohio State may select an Ohio State instructor from the subject of their choice to provide the recommendation.
IMPORTANT: Students are required to complete the course selection process (please see "courses and credits" section for additional information) before starting an ISA application.
ISA requires all applicants to submit a non- refundable deposit of $95 at the time of application.
All elements of the ISA application must be completed by the Ohio State deadline. This includes the online application, ISA credit verification form, official Ohio State transcript, service learning supplement page (if applicable) and resume (if applicable). Students are advised to order an electronic copy of their transcript and request it to be emailed directly to their ISA Program Manager. Online order requests may be completed on Buckeyelink under "Academics and Records."
Passports are required for every Ohio State study abroad program. For many study abroad destinations, passport information is required to apply for an entry visa (as early as 6 months prior to departure). For information about applying for a passport, go to travel.state.gov.
Students will pay the ISA program fee (minus a $200 discount given to OSU students) and International insurance fee. A waiver of tuition for Ohio State students that participate on university-approved third party provider or direct enroll programming is in effect until June 30, 2021. The ISA program fee includes instruction, volunteer/internship placement, room and meals with a host family, on-site orientation, excursions and transfer from/to the airport. Airfare, books/supplies, personal expenses and independent travel are not included in the program fee
If students withdraw or become ineligible any time 11 days after the acceptance notification from OSU, they will be held responsible for a $200 cancellation fee. Please refer to OIA's Cancellation Policy.
