Program

Ohio State students have the opportunity to enroll for an autumn term or academic year at Laban, one of the world’s finest centers for the training of professional contemporary dance artists.

Direct enroll programs require a higher level of independence and the ability to navigate a foreign educational system without assistance designed to cater to the needs of education abroad students from the United States.

The level of services provided varies widely between institutions, but interested students should be prepared for:

  • Minimal or no U.S.-based staff representing the host institution

  • Basic pre-departure orientation materials

  • International student orientation upon arrival

Locations

Laban’s awe-inspiring landmark building is at the heart of South East London’s thriving arts community and houses the largest team of specialist contemporary dance teachers in the world. London is one of the world’s most diverse and arts driven cities in the world. With a population of seven million the city offers culturally rich museums, libraries, famous theatres, concert halls and historic buildings.

It is a creative and cosmopolitan community of performers, choreographers, teachers and researchers from around the globe. To be a leading center of contemporary dance Laban brings together students, choreographers, designers, writers, researchers, artists, theatre practitioners and musicians from around the world. Laban's state of the art facilities include 13 fully equipped dance studios, a health and Pilates body conditioning facility, and a world famous dance library and archive.

Accommodations

Housing is provided for academic year students only. Autumn term applicants are required to locate, secure and pay the cost of housing independently. Students offered a place at Laban for the academic year will be sent an application pack for accommodation in the McMillian student village. Laban will also provide students with a list of landlords and housing associations offering flats, houses and bed-sits in Deptford and the surrounding area. The list also contains details of local papers which advertise property available for rent.

Courses and Credit

Laban offers a variety of contemporary dance courses for dance majors to choose from.

Each course a student takes abroad, regardless of the grade received or how course credit counts toward degree requirements, must:
  • Be approved via the credit evaluation process (non-language courses, only); students are strongly encouraged to do this prior to submitting their applications.
  • Transfer back to the student’s Ohio State record.
  • Be completed for graded Ohio State credit. This grade will be factored into the student’s GPA.
Completion of the credit evaluation process does not guarantee the availability of the course abroad. Students are encouraged to have multiple back-up courses approved. Students who cancel their participation for failure to secure approval for desired course work will be subject to the cancellation policy

Admitted participants are required to register themselves in the temporary study abroad placeholder course, ARTSSCI 5797.  Further instructions will be provided upon admission to the program.
