Program Summer Laval tab 1

The 5 week intensive Summer French at Laval program in Québec offers qualified students the chance to increase their command of French in a French-speaking environment and introduces them to the heritage and cultural traditions of a unique and vital segment of North American culture. This program is affiliated with Laval University's "Cours d'été pour non-francophones". Laval University will evaluate the students' level of French when they arrive in Québec. At levels six and seven (equivalent to upper level courses offered for the French major), students choose from courses in language, literature and culture.

Locations

Rising atop an immense promontory carved out of the Laurentian foothills, Québec City is basically a natural fortress. Québec City, whose center is about six kilometers from the University, is easily accessible by bus, car or bicycle. Less cosmopolitan than Montreal, Québec City has preserved its French character and language, while developing into a modern North American city. Because of its museums, old-world atmosphere and rich history, Québec City has become a chief attraction for summer visitors to the province. Quebec is also famed for it's10 day international music festival which takes place while this program is in session. A distinguished Canadian university, Laval University is the oldest French-speaking institution of higher learning in North America.

Accommodations

Students will be housed in single rooms in university residence halls. In residence halls, students can eat in the university cafeteria at an additional expense.

Courses and Credit Summer Laval tab 2

Each course a student takes abroad, regardless of the grade received or how course credit counts toward degree requirements, must:
  • Be approved via the credit evaluation process (non-language courses, only); students are strongly encouraged to do this prior to submitting their applications.
  • Transfer back to the student’s Ohio State record.
  • Be completed for graded Ohio State credit. This grade will be factored into the student’s GPA.
Completion of the credit evaluation process does not guarantee the availability of the course abroad. Students are encouraged to have multiple back-up courses approved. Students who cancel their participation for failure to secure approval for desired course work will be subject to the cancellation policy

Admitted participants are required to register themselves in the temporary study abroad placeholder course, ARTSSCI 5797.  Further instructions will be provided upon admission to the program.

Admitted participants are required to register in 6 hours of ASC 5797 which will be converted to appropriate French credit upon successful completion of the program. Students will earn 6 semester credits during this program. Classes meet five days per week for 4 - 5 hours per day, depending on the level of study. Students at the advanced levels may select courses in language, literature and culture. The exact Ohio State course equivalencies are determined by the Department of French and Italian.
