The Global Service Learning Program is comprised of 90 class hours and 45 hours of on-site community engagement. Students take the 9-credit Global Service Learning course plus one or two courses from the Full Curriculum Program or the General Education Program. Courses are taught in English.
This program develops your understanding of the historical background and current issues impacting community life and in South Africa, in addition to giving you firsthand experience working on a service learning project within the local community.
Live in double rooms in the university residence hall. You will receive breakfast daily in your residence hall, as well as welcome and farewell meals hosted by the University.
Cultural and social activities include:
Wine or beer craft tastings
Visits to Cape Town and Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope and Robben Island
3-day West Coast excursion.
An optional, 6-day Garden Route excursion is also available to AIFS students.
Over 50% of our students receive financial support from AIFS in the form of scholarships or grants!
AIFS is recognized as a premier provider of study abroad programs. All-inclusive program fees cover tuition, housing, a meal plan, tours and excursions, insurance and 24-hour emergency service. Since 1964, more than 1.5 million students have traveled abroad with AIFS.
The AIFS Service Learning program at Stellenbosch offers a course on Learning for a Sustainable Community Engagement. Elective courses taught in English are available in African studies, ecology, economics, geography, history, law, literature, political science, sociology and viticulture. For a summary of courses available to students, please see the AIFS catalogue at aifsabroad.com. Specific Ohio State course equivalences and credits will be determined by the appropriate Ohio State academic departments.
Each course a student takes abroad, regardless of the grade received or how course credit counts toward degree requirements, must:
Be approved via the credit evaluation process; students are strongly encouraged to do this priorto submitting their applications.
Transfer back to the student’s Ohio State record.
Be completed for graded Ohio State credit. This grade will be factored into the student’s GPA.
Completion of the credit evaluation process does not guarantee the availability of the course abroad. Students are encouraged to have multiple back-up courses approved. Students who cancel their participation for failure to secure approval for desired course work will be subject to the cancellation policy.
Admitted participants are required to register themselves in the temporary study abroad placeholder course, ARTSSCI 5797. Further instructions will be provided upon admission to the program.
Students may not graduate during the same term in which they are participating on a third party provider/direct enroll program.
Applicants are required to submit TWO applications:
1. OIA education abroad application (start at the "Apply Now" at the bottom or top of this page);
2. AIFS application.
IMPORTANT: Both applications must be submitted by the Ohio State application deadline.
Passports are required for every Ohio State study abroad program. For many study abroad destinations, passport information is required to apply for an entry visa (as early as 6 months prior to departure). For information about applying for a passport, go to travel.state.gov.
Students will pay the AIFS program fee* and GeoBlue International insurance fee. A waiver of tuition for Ohio State students that participate on university-approved third party provider or direct enroll programming is in effect until June 30, 2021. The AIFS program fee includes tuition, housing, excursions, ten meals per week and in-country orientation.
If students withdraw or become ineligible any time 11 days after the acceptance notification from OSU, they will be held responsible for a $200 cancellation fee. Please refer to OIA's Cancellation Policy.
*OSU students participating on an OSU-approved AIFS semester program will discount of $400 (each semester);
Please note that upon application, a $150 application fee will be assessed. The application fee will be refunded only if the applicant is not accepted or a written request to withdraw the application is submitted prior to the application deadline. Both the OIA and AIFS applications must be submitted by the Ohio State deadline. The AIFS application can be found at aifsabroad.com. All AIFS application materials must be submitted directly to AIFS.
