Program Overview

This Program is ideal for students with a love for creative writing or a passion for British literature. Students have the chance to immerse themselves in the culture and history of Edinburgh while working with accomplished British writers.

Students have the choice of taking one of three course groupings surrounding British literature and creative writing:

Text & Context: British Literature from 1900 to the Present: This module examines literature from Britain and Ireland in the context of key societal and cultural developments in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Creative Writing and Contemporary British Literature: This course offers developing writers a supportive environment in which to further their writing skills in fiction, poetry, and drama.

Creative Writing and Contemporary British Theater & Performance: For this module, students get the chance to study theatre and performance.

Courses and Credits

The Arcadia VIRTUAL Scottish Universities International Summer School program offers courses taught by expert faculty from Edinburgh. For a summary of courses available to students, please see the Arcadia catalogue at studyabroad.arcadia.edu. Specific Ohio State course equivalences and credits will be determined by the appropriate Ohio State academic departments.

Each course a student takes, regardless of the grade received or how course credit counts toward degree requirements, must:
Be approved via the credit evaluation process; students are strongly encouraged to do this prior to submitting their applications.
  • Transfer back to the student’s Ohio State record.
  • Be completed for graded Ohio State credit. This grade will be factored into the student’s GPA.
Completion of the credit evaluation process does not guarantee the availability of the course abroad. Students are encouraged to have multiple back-up courses approved. Students who cancel their participation for failure to secure approval for desired course work will be subject to the cancellation policy

Admitted participants are required to register themselves in the temporary placeholder course. Further instructions will be provided upon admission to the program.
